Avascular necrosis of the femoral head![]() This condition typically manifests itself at between 40 and 50 years of age, when a sudden and intense pain in the hip is felt which may not subside with rest and may wake the sufferer during the night. This is undoubtedly the result of the fact that the head of the femur is not receiving sufficient blood flow. This disease has different phases and stages. During the initial stages, there are less aggressive operations, such as forage or decompression. Vascularised grafts may even provide an acceptable success rate. In advanced stages, the femoral head penetrates further and causes rapid wear because it has lost its sphericity. In this case, we must resort to the highly successful arthroprosthetic techniques previously described under osteoarthritis of the hip in young adults and age-related osteoarthritis.
